Have Suitcase Will Travel
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes,- Marcel Proust
Since 2006, I have lived the life of an expatriate on the shores of Lake Chapala, Mexico. In an effort to reinvent myself after 33 years as a Social Worker and Admissions Officer at a Pennsylvania State Psychiatric Hospital, my husband, Ernie and I made the leap from our comfort zone to the chaos of third-world life.
Bitten by the travel bug 40 years ago, the list of countries we have visited has grown to over 100, and all seven continents. Travel Writing has been a passion my entire adult life, as I wanted to share our adventures of experiencing different cultures with others.
Writing and Teaching
Early on, I wrote for Central American newspapers, Costa Rica's Tico Times, Honduras This Week and Belize First Magazine. Once I moved to Mexico, I contributed articles regularly to local English magazines, Living at Lake Chapala, Lake Chapala Review, and the largest distribution English magazine in Mexico, El Ojo del Lago, www.chapala.com. I have won three literary awards from this publication, Best Feature, 2010, Best Fiction 2014 and Long Standing Contributor, 2017.
Over the years, published articles have appeared in Offshore Living, Escape Magazine, Overseas Adventure Travel online magazines, Inside Scoop, and Harriet's Corner . Utilizing actual experiences from working in the Mental Health field, a short story selected to be part of the literary journal, Workers Write Tales From the Couch Anthology V, was published by Blue Cubicle Press, available on Amazon.com.
More recently, stories and photos of our adventures from around the globe can be found at the international online travel magazine, Go World Travel, www.goworldtravel.com.
For 12 years, I have taught Mexican adults English as a Second Language at a school run by voluntary expatriates in the Chapala, Mexico area. The relationship between my students and myself is a symbiotic one. They help me improve my Spanish, while I help them to move forward in a community of residents who need English speaking workers.
